VAriety screenshot

British photojournalist Kate Holt’s work takes her into harsh situations where people are living with the effects of war and violence. Often dealing with uncomfortable environments and security restrictions, she works quickly to gather recordings and photographs for audio slideshows that are later published by NGO (non-governmental organizations) and leading media outlets. Her stories from East Africa and Eastern Europe have influenced public opinion and forced changes in public policy.

In this Part 2 in a four-part Soundslides interview, Holt describes the kinds of photos she seeks in order to tell a complete story.

Kate Holt’s audio slideshow insights, part 1

Kate Holt portrait

The first of four installments on British freelance photojournalist Kate Holt's advice for planning, creating and using audio slideshows to tell compelling digital stories. This month and next month on Twitter and Facebook, Soundslides will feature a selection of Holt's work. Keep an eye out.

Mountain Workshops 2012 - Web and Production team

Soundslides has been a part of Mountain Workshops for a long time. Joe Weiss has been going for over a decade and Justin Winter has been a part of the workshop for 8 years. This year we have a great team and probably the most technical expertise we've ever had. We're re-architecting the main website to use Django and implementing some fancy new designs. Check out the Mountain Workshop website for more info.

NPR chooses audio slideshows to create compelling stories for the Web

post-img1

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, Keith W. Jenkins, the supervising senior producer for multimedia at National Public Radio, will teach a Poynter Institute Webinar on how to create powerful stories with Soundslides.

Jenkins’ one-hour online Webinar is part of the Poynter Institute series “Essential Skills for the Digital Journalist.” The class will teach more than the basics of Soundslides; it will enter the next level of audio slideshow production by showing students how to stay focused on the story narrative while creating the simple layers of photos and sound. (For those who can’t watch the Webinar live, the video will be archived for downloading to view anytime later. Check out thePoynter Institute course.) We reached Jenkins in his Washington, D.C. office this week to get his take on Soundslides.

This is an amazing audio slideshow by Neil Hall posted on The Guardian that shows some amazing images of collecting water from fog in the Chilean Atacama desert. Beyond the technology being amazing this is a great example of story telling.
