Moors and Christians conflict captured in our featured travel slideshow

In a set of annual festivals, Spain pays tribute to the battles between Moors and Christians that rocked the country between the 8th and 15th centuries. The people who take part dress in Mediaeval costumes and represent either the Moors (Muslims) or the Christians in mock battles and parades. Paul Louis Archer’s slideshow, one of the first submitted to our travel audio slideshow contest, captures the conflict.

Audio slideshows: Perfecting the art of hanging out

This audio slideshow about two street musicians on Chicago’s Red Line El train reveals some nice storytelling skills.

The "Chicago Street Musicians" audio slideshow is published on the award-winning hyperlocal news site The Red Line Project, created in 2011 by DePaul University students and their College of Communications instructor Mike Reilley. Photos are by Forest Davis, and audio recordings are by Kevin Dempsey and Jake Scott.

When is a story right for an audio slideshow?

How do you know a story will make a good audio slideshow? Matching the story to the storytelling tool is key, explained Mike Reilley in a chat with Soundslides recently. Reilley is an instructor in DePaul University's College of Communications. The hyperlocal news site redlineproject.org that he and his students started two years ago has won awards from the Associated Collegiate Press and the Online News Association. The Red Line Project — a hyperlocal news site at DePaul University

 

In 2009, when Mike Reilley joined the faculty at DePaul University's College of Communication journalism program in Chicago, he and his students had an arsenal of multimedia software at hand, including Soundslides. But they needed a thematic focus and an online platform for their work. Choosing a theme wasn't easy. Their subject would have to produce continual news stories and present easy access. The students also wanted to publish stories about areas of the city that were underserved by some of the major media outlets.

Eva Gilliam: making great audio slideshow profiles of people

Audio slideshows are especially suited for people profiles. In a conversation with Soundslides earlier this month, freelance digital media producer and videographer Eva Gilliam suggested we look at an audio slideshow that was part of the Children’s Radio Foundation Young Reporters Network project.

John Freeman teaching audio slideshows in Berlin, Part 2

Photographer and educator John Freeman teaches an annual study abroad multimedia program in Berlin for the University of Florida. Soundslides is an important part of the program, as students need to quickly produce a project they can share during the workshop. The students often gather together in their hotel late at night to edit their audio slideshows.

Freeman describes a couple of guidelines he thinks greatly improve the student's success with the software.
